Responsible Gambling

Casinos licensed outside the UK are not part of the GamStop self-exclusion scheme. That is precisely why many players look for them, and it is also why the usual safety net is missing. This page sets out, without lecturing, what GamStop covers, what it does not, and which controls remain available to you when you play at a site it does not reach.

What GamStop covers

GamStop is a free scheme that blocks you from every online gambling operator holding a UK Gambling Commission licence for a period you choose: six months, one year or five years. It is compulsory for UK-licensed sites and cannot be reversed early once set.

It does not cover operators licensed in Curaçao, Anjouan, Kahnawake or elsewhere. Those sites can accept UK customers legally, and using them is not an offence. But the automatic block, the shared deposit-limit culture and the UK complaint route all stop at the licence boundary.

Before you register anywhere

Four honest questions are worth a minute of your time:

  • Did I join GamStop because gambling was causing a problem, or for another reason?
  • Have the circumstances that led to that decision actually changed?
  • Am I planning to play with money I can afford to lose in full?
  • Would the people closest to me be comfortable knowing I was doing this?

If any answer gives you pause, the support services at the bottom of this page are free, and talking to them commits you to nothing.

Controls that work outside GamStop

Control Where to set it What it does
Deposit limit Casino account settings or via live chat Caps what you can pay in per day, week or month. Most reputable non GamStop sites offer this on request even without a UK licence
Session reminder or time-out Casino account settings Interrupts play after a set period or locks the account for 24 hours to six weeks
Account closure Casino support Permanent self-exclusion from that one operator. Ask for written confirmation
Bank gambling block Your banking app (Monzo, Starling, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest and others) Declines card payments coded as gambling, with a cooling-off delay before it can be switched off
Blocking software Gamban, BetBlocker or Gamblock on your devices Blocks thousands of gambling domains, including non GamStop casinos, at device level

The bank block and device-level software are the two that matter most if you want something GamStop-like, because they do not depend on any casino’s cooperation.

Habits that keep play enjoyable

  1. Decide the amount you are prepared to lose before you deposit, and deposit only that.
  2. Never chase a losing session with a second deposit. The session ends when the budget does.
  3. Treat bonus money as bonus money. A 200% match with 40x wagering is not a gift; it is a condition.
  4. Use voucher or prepaid methods such as Paysafecard if linking a card makes repeat deposits too easy.
  5. Keep gambling out of the hours you would otherwise spend sleeping or working.

Signs it may be time to stop

Gambling more than planned, borrowing to play, hiding activity from others, feeling restless when not playing, or playing to escape a bad day are all recognised warning signs. One on its own is worth noticing. Several together are worth acting on.

Free support in the UK

  • National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133, open 24/7, run by GamCare, with live chat at gamcare.org.uk
  • BeGambleAware: information, self-assessment tools and a directory of local treatment services
  • NHS gambling clinics: specialist treatment available by referral or self-referral in England
  • Gamblers Anonymous UK: peer-support meetings in person and online
  • GamFam and Gam-Anon: support for partners and family members affected by someone else’s gambling

None of these services require you to be on GamStop, and none will tell you to stop gambling unless you want to.

Under 18s

Every casino reviewed on this site requires players to be 18 or over, and so does this site. If you are concerned that a young person has access to a gambling account, the operator’s support team and your bank can both act quickly.

How each recommended casino performs on player-protection tools is part of its score, as explained on our About Us page, and you can compare sites on that basis in our casinos not on GamStop UK guide. If you want to tell us about an operator that refused a limit request, our Contact Us page is the place. Use of this site is subject to our Terms and Conditions.
